Sherlock Holmes, Jeeves and Wooster, and a zombie-plagued Elizabeth Bennet are but three of the characters brought back from their literary graves to be born again in the pages of a book. Here are five more. Two are expected fall blockbusters, one came out in April, and the others are good to keep on hand in case readers want further examples. girlinspidersweb82115

  • The Black-Eyed Blonde: A Philip Marlowe Novel by Benjamin Black (Holt).
Black is a pseudonym for John Banville (and in both iterations there are new books on the way). In this 2014 novel, he brings back Raymond Chandler’s iconic PI Philip Marlowe in a case that evokes the original in style, tone, and finely wrought locale.
  • The Monogram Murders: The New Hercule Poirot Mystery by Sophie Hannah & Agatha Christie (Morrow).
Hannah has a new book out, Woman with a Secret, but last year she penned this well-received return of Poirot—full of deft Christie touches and plenty of Golden Age mystery detail.
  • Trigger Mortis: A James Bond Novel by Anthony Horowitz (Harper, Sept.).
This September, Horowitz (who has also resurrected Sherlock Holmes) turns his attentions to James Bond, 007. He has a bit of help in that he uses some unpublished material by Bond creator Ian Fleming. This story, set several weeks after the events of Goldfinger, will also feature the return of Pussy Galore.
  • The Girl in the Spider’s Web: A Lisbeth Salander Novel by David Lagercrantz (Knopf, Sept.).
Next month also brings fresh ink to Lisbeth Salander in this fourth book continuing Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” series, also featuring Mikael Blomkvist. It’s embargoed but reportedly not based on any of the notes Larsson left after his death in 2004.
  • Emma: A Modern Retelling by Alexander McCall Smith (Pantheon).
Jane Austen’s Emma, that lovely woman who believes she has all the right answers, returns in this contemporary version penned by cozy mystery master McCall Smith. Emma is just out of university with a desire to become an interior decorator, and, of course, George Knightley and Jane Fairfax come to town.
